VR - Canon Update
*comment to taken list w/new canon point, keep in mind that Thida will be unconscious for 7 days while this takes place*
Original Canon Point: After completing the Single Player Campaign of Splatoon and the NA Cats vs Dogs Splatfest
New Canon Point: 2yrs from original canon point. After completion of Splatoon 2's Single Player Campaign and the Octo Expansion, as well as the Pulp vs No Pulp Splatfest
Physical/Mental Changes: Thida is now 16yrs old. She hasn't gotten any taller, but she is somewhat more well-spoken and can keep herself composed. She's a touch less wild but still reacts automatically to sounds/stimuli of battle, and her aim/battling abilities have increased significantly. She's much faster than she used to be as well. Still dresses more in a hiking/mountain enthusiast manner with boots, vests, plaid, and coats, but has taken to hoodies as well. Still wearing those old goggles, which have at points now been mended by hand.
Personal History: After the events of Thida's first Splatfest, Thida was finally beginning to feel like she could settle into life in Inkopolis - and then she was contacted by one of the villagers from her mountain town, the old woman who had checked in on her the most and had offered her the bus ticket to Inkopolis in the first place. There was news on her parents' whereabouts. Without a word, Thida left the city as soon as she was able, not knowing when she would come back or if she could, taking with her as much as she could carry.
What greeted her was news that she had long dreaded: her parents had been confirmed dead, her mother in a car accident in the neighboring valley, which had damaged something, leading to a cave-in when her father found the wreck days later, where he died. After all the trials and tribulations of being a secret agent, living day to day on Turf Wars, the grief made the stress within her give way, and Thida became inconsolable for an entire week. She could see, at the sight of the crash, what authorities did not notice - the remains of an Octarian kettle entrance and the cave-in of a tunnel to what was likely one of their underground settlements. Clearly the car had driven into the kettle on accident and then became unstable, leading to the cave-in. It wasn't an act of senseless violence or becoming lost and dying of exposure. There was no hoping against hope that her family would return someday, or was alright out in the world, and more than anything Thida truly felt alone.
It took about a week for the small community to prepare a funeral for their fellows, and Thida was still wracked with grief throughout - but it was there that something strange happened. An elderly Inkling couple from Inkopolis arrived, clearly shocked and hurting, and claimed to be Thida's father's parents - her grandparents. Word somehow had come to them of their son's passing, whom they'd been estranged from since his teens, and they wanted to do right by him by honoring what remained of his peaceful life, aka his daughter. Thida, far too upset to think of trying to live on her own again immediately, agreed to allow them to take her in as their own, to make up for estranging their son, and suddenly her life became incredibly different.
Thida's grandparents, you see, were well-to-do and very much concerned with upholding the values of Inkling society - but they had softened on that some in their old age and regret for turning out their son for being a pacifist. They were quick to enroll Thida in school and after-school programs to catch up to her peers, bought her everything she'd need for classes...though there was very little she personally asked for, they supported the hobbies she expressed interest in. With a bit of pain and nostalgia, they allowed her to enroll in guitar lessons, which she took to with her father's old guitar and an incredible drive to improve. They limited Turf War activity only because she needed to catch up academically, but allowed her to participate in them even as they shifted to Inkopolis Square, and even went out of their way to find little Squid Sister trinkets as the duo split for their solo careers.
With all of this going on, one would wonder how she could fit in time to continue to be Agent 3 of the Squidbeak Splatoon, but that came by a stroke of luck as well - Cap'n Cuttlefish happened to play bridge with her grandfather and some other elderly Inklings once a week, and when he learned just who his card buddy's new granddaughter was, he insisted that she "volunteer" to spend time with him for her college resumes. Ecstatic that a war hero would want her help, Thida's grandparents agreed, and it soon became commonplace for Thida to spend her weekends on missions, talking out her pain with the Cap'n (who had lost people he loved as well, when you live as long as he does), and beginning to adjust to this new chapter in her life.
Canon History: Here's where we get to canon.
Before Splatoon 2's Single Player Campaign kicks off, Thida and Cap'n Cuttlefish are reportedly "at the cape" somewhere in Octo Valley via Sunken Scroll 25 for a research mission. This is not uncommon, as Thida finds much purpose in patrolling and missions. During the mission, she encounters a strange Octoling girl about her age, and the two engage in combat, not pausing to talk anything out - when you're used to being attacked on sight, why would you try diplomacy with the enemy? In the scuffle, the two girls and Cap'n Cuttlefish are attached by a mysterious assailant and knocked into the Deepsea Metro, a network of underground subway tunnels populated by sea creatures who either aspire to crawl up and live on the surface or cannot due to their need to live in darkness. In the scuffle Thida is seperated from the Octoling and Cap'n, and finds herself exploring the strange and befuddling remains built around the metro, most things human-sized and filled with strange, mindless, blue-colored Octarians that attack on sight. She finds a device called a CQ-80 (an employee model to be precise) and holds onto it as she travels, doing her best to make sense of her findings - at most, she can determine that these are human structures, that something has altered these Octarians, and that the same may happen to Cap'n and that Octoling if she doesn't find them.
While exploring, the CQ-80 in her posession activates with a distress signal - from where, she doesn't know, but she follows its provided information and bursts through a ceiling into the metro proper, destroying a giant assembled blender that was about to whip Cap'n and the Octoling, now dubbed "Agent 8" into a pulp. She is knocked unconscious as a result, unaware that Agent 8 takes her CQ-80 to explore the metro for a proper exit while Cap'n looks after her - but neither of them can even guess at what is yet to come.
Thida is not aware of the AI known as Commander Tartar, that it was made by humans to pass on their knowledge to an intelligent species and it deemed no species on Earth worthy. She hadn't pieced together that this AI was kidnapping all kinds of species and, when found unworthy, blending them up into a slurry used to mind control others to do its bidding. She did not guess that, when all were found unworthy, it would try to blow up this funky cephalopod civilization to start anew. But this doesn't matter to an AI, and while unconscious, Tartar attacks, "sanitizing" her into being its battle ready puppet. She ties up Cap'n and goes hunting for Agent 8, engaging the Octoling in battle on an elevator and displaying an incredible amount of skill and strength, but is thankfully knocked out by Agent 8, having toughened up during her own adventures in the metro. She's taken up to the surface by Cap'n, and comes to as herself once Tartar has been defeated, a bandaid on her head, greeted by a quiet, smiling Agent 8 - no longer a foe, but an ally for certain.
While the attack on her own self doesn't keep Thida from patroling the metro or Inkopolis again after the events of Octo Expansion, I would believe the experience left a mark on her that would not go unnoticed. I don't think she would directly remember her actions while sanitized, but thinking back on that blank spot in her memory likely hurts. She would have definitely gained a much kinder opinion of Octarians and Octolings, after having seen both Agent 8 and Marina (who, with Pearl, assisted Agent 8 in escaping to the surface) give their all to protect Inkopolis, and would likely try to reach out in friendship towards Agent 8, having known full well what it's like to adjust to sudden city life. It would likely be because of this friendship that she'd come to the Pulp vs No Pulp Splatfest, properly rekindling her love of Turf War and genuinely bringing her happiness - the first real happiness since before her parents were found dead. She would also become more interested and kind towards Octarians and Octolings, and making attempts to try and look at things from their point of view, noting the kind of forced acceptance from Cap'n (because let's face it, he a species-ist) and her grandparents' own confusion and dislike for the Octoling influx that takes place after Octo Expansion and being critical of it, in her own way.
What she knows of Splatoon 2's original Single Player campaign likely came after her return to the city proper from Octo Expansion's events - she likely checked in with Marie and found Callie with her, and they relayed the tale of Agent 4, so she's aware there's another agent but hasn't met them yet. She'd like to, but it's not a 100% top priority. Seeing her favorite girls together and happy, though? That makes her feel like she's indebted to Agent 4 for sure, since she couldn't be there to help them herself.
She's still hurt from being isolated, but she's properly healing. She's still essentially a child soldier, but she's learning how to be better. She's smarter, more well-spoken, but still blunt, tough, and fun-loving. She's Thida, and that's okay.
